Grand Theft Auto V Multiplayer Details

Rockstar Games co-founder and the co-writer of Grand Theft Auto V, Dan Houser has revealed that Grand Theft Auto V will let players use the same 'crews' they establish and build in Max Payne 3's multiplayer, thanks to Social Club integration.

Speaking exclusively to IGN about Max Payne 3's multiplayer, Houser said, "Multiplayer is an ever-more important part of all our games moving forward. And by creating crews through Social Club, the crews that you create in Max Payne 3 will be ready and available for you to play in Grand Theft Auto V from day one. It's all part of our larger approach to make multiplayer deeper and richer than what's currently available, much more easily accessible to the newcomer and rewarding for the hardcore.

"We made a promise not to talk too much about forthcoming games until a little further down the track but, yes, crews will feature in Grand Theft Auto V multiplayer."

This likely means everything that comes with being part of a crew in Max Payne 3 will carry over into GTA V. You and your crew members' ongoing vendettas are constantly tracked, so if someone your crew is targeting pops up in a game you're notified so you can plan to exact your revenge and scoop up extra XP as a result. You can read more about Max Payne's crews and how they might impact Grand Theft Auto V's multiplayer in IGN's exclusive interview with Dan Houser.

The announcement trailer for Grand Theft Auto V was released at the end of last year. No news regarding an official release date has yet been made.

Minecraft for Xbox 360 has a release date

Minecraft Update 1.6 To Add Grass, Shrooms And More -- Planned For This Week

The release date for the 360 version of indie-game Minecraft has been revealed. You'll be punching trees and fighting skeletons on May 9.

While the gameplay of Minecraft will be very similar to the PC version, the most trumpeted innovation of the 360 Minecraft is in the documentation. Basically, there is some. The devs say they've worked hard to include a comprehensive tutorial as well as synthesizing the volumes of information about the game from the web to the console.

According to Microsoft:

"The Xbox LIVE Arcade version of the game features an innovative new crafting interface, natural controller movements, a full Tutorial mode to teach the basics and for the first time in “Minecraft,” split-screen multiplayer as well as over Xbox LIVE"

I can't wait to give it a try on May 9.

Max Payne 3 Multiplayer Details

Max Payne 3 Trailer Breakdown

Rockstar's Dan Houser has revealed some interesting details about the multiplayer for Max Payne 3, including tons of details of MP3's multiplayer clans (called "crews"). Even if you don't want to play Max Payne 3, pay attention: Houser says the Crew ideas will cross-over into Grand Theft Auto 5, as will the crews themselves!

In an interview with IGN, Houser says the idea of Max Payne 3's multiplayer is to bridge the storytelling and characters of single-player with the fun of multiplayer, and create a game where gamers are not just faceless members of an army, but real characters.

"We are firm believers in the potential of third-person multiplayer and the attachment it can create to character, stories and worlds. This is at the heart of what we're doing with crews, and we think it opens up limitless new possibilities for the future. It's right at the heart of our goal to bring greater weight and context to multiplayer games while still staying true to what competitive multiplayer does so well."

Toward that end, Houser says Rockstar is making Max Payne 3's multiplayer welcoming to newer players.

"With Max Payne 3 we absolutely wanted to make a more competitive experience that lives up to the requirements of a pure shooter – with as much as possible customizable, persistent and trackable, but also to make it easy for people to jump in and feel comfortable quickly so that the environment is fun for the less competitive as well as for serious players. Jumping into online matches and making friends isn't easy – often if you're not already playing with friends the entire process can be fairly intimidating, especially in competitive matches."

Friends (and like-minded strangers) will be organized into crews groups of players who band together to play the game. There are more advantages than just hanging out with your pals to joining a crew.

"Performing tasks with crew members – like avenging a fallen Crew member or killing rival ones during a Feud – will earn you XP bonuses. As a casual player of multiplayer, it will be easy to quickly reap at least some of the benefits of being in a crew. In addition, there are no member caps on public crews, so thousands of players across the world can join the same crew. Alternatively, Private Crews provide an exclusive group experience for players that want to take it to the next level.

Peter Molyneux Leaves Lionhead, Microsoft

Peter Molyneux Says Fable III Nearing

It's the end of an era: Video game visionary and all around awesome guy Peter Molyneux announced today that he is leaving his role as the head of development house Lionhead Studio, and also walking away from his role as creative director of Microsoft Studios Europe.

“It is with mixed emotions that I made the decision to leave Microsoft and Lionhead Studios, the company that I co-founded in 1997, at the conclusion of development of Fable: The Journey,” Molyneux said in a statement.

“I remain extremely passionate and proud of the people, products and experiences that we created from Black & White to Fable to our pioneering work with Milo and Kate for the Kinect platform. However, I felt the time was right to pursue a new independent venture. I’d like to thank the team at Lionhead, as well as our partners at Microsoft Studios for their support, dedication and incredible work over the years.”

Molyneux is leaving to form a company with Lionhead’s former chief technical officer Tim Rance. Be on the lookout for  22 Cans. We don't know what Molyneux will be up to at his new company, but we'll keep you appraised as it develops.

Fable Heroes information

Apparently, Fable Heroes is a forthcoming XBLA game from Lionhead Studios that has been unceremoniously leaked by the Xbox Live Marketplace. The screenshots in the gallery below show the rather cartoony game's four-player multiplayer, which the title's blurb describes as simultaneously cooperative and competitive.

Said screenshots also show a distinctly board-game-esque game board, which makes us think that Fable Heroes may be a Mario Party-ish friendship ruiner couch multiplayer game. Players will earn gold coins that can be spent on "upgrades, characters, and items in both this game and Fable: The Journey for Kinect for Xbox 360." We wouldn't be surprised if Fable Heroes' actual announcement happens during this week's Game Developers Conference.

Killer Instinct Reboot, Maybe?

If it isn't Killer Instinct then I don't know what it could be.  Fans have been asking for it for so many years and year after year there is no mention of a Killer Instinct reboot, but maybe now with the success of the Mortal Kombat reboot they decided to finally go with it.  Crossing Fingers

New Assassins Creed pictures

Sim City 5 in 2013??

A new Sim City is in the works at Maxis, reports German magazine Gamestar (via Shack News). The game's being developed with a view toward release next year, says the mag, and will be revealed next week at GDC. EA's Erik Reynolds hinted at a similar possibility earlier this month, teasing an “EA Maxis GDC announcement, huge event” over Twitter (via CVG).

Development on the new Sim City, according to Gamestar, is headed by Maxis' Kip Katsarelis. The game's at around 30% completion, says the magazine, far too early to display graphics to the public – but concept artwork (above) offers an idea of the game's target look. Employing a new Glassbox rendering engine, the game will supposedly offer more organic player control of elements such as road placement and camera movement, with Maxis aiming to deliver a level of detail that'll hold up at 1:1 zoom just as well as in Sim City's more traditional macro-perspective. Of course, all of these details are “apparently” this and “allegedly” that until EA and Maxis make their big reveal at GDC's Game Changers event next week...

Assassin's Creed 3 details leaked??

Remember when Ubisoft hinted that it would be revealing Assassin's Creed III details "soon?" Turns out the internet isn't giving it a chance. A tipster from Best Buy sent Kotaku an image that shows off what appears to be the game's new protagonist, standing in front of a Revolutionary War-era American flag hinting that earlier reports of a late 1700s setting were, indeed, accurate.

It also looks like the report was on the nose when it comes to the protagonist. Take a look.

The character looks dressed in Native American garb, if his boots are any indication. He's carrying a tomahawk shaped like the Assassin's Creed A, which also appears on his belt. On his back there's a bow and quiver of arrows, and in his left hand is a revolver, showing that ranged weapons will likely play a bigger role in this game than they did in the past few. On his hip there is what appears to be a sword, and and it looks like he still has a hidden blade, though we can't be too sure.He might have two for all we know - it's hard to tell with all of that snow.

And hey! There's snow. This means the game will likely take place in the northern part of North America during the Revolutionary War.

This is still a rumor, but considering how well it lines up with earlier reports we'd be shocked if it wasn't true. Hopefully we'll find out in the near future, since we can't wait to find out more information.

Scrapped 2007 Call of Duty game

Call of Duty: Devil's Brigade

Before Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was even released a third-person game in the series was in development, until it was cancelled for good.

New details have been released about a 'scrapped' Call of Duty game that was being designed during 2007, almost five months before the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, the game that many believe begun the titanic rise of the Call of Duty series, up to where it is today.

However, via Vox Games, Creative Director Jason VandenBerghe has announced that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare wasn't the only title designed during 2007. Call of Duty: Devil's Brigade was intended to be a third-person shooter set in Italy, during World War II. Created by a small team of developers known - ironically - as Underground Development, the game was set to feature exploration, powerful squad mechanics, and a story based upon the super-athletic killers known as the 'Devil's Brigade'. The idea no doubt branched from the real life Devil's Brigade, known to be some of the hardiest and capable soldiers ever to have existed, whom infiltrated German trenches and wiped out hundreds of soldiers, Underground Development clearly had a similar goal in mind for the game. However, it was never meant to be.

The initial idea for the game seemed almost fool-proof; a team of brilliant designers, the financial backing from the behemoth Activision, and the support of original Call of Duty creators Infinity Ward. It was a match made in heaven for everybody involved in the process, however, just before the game was ready to enter it's final stages of completion, Activision announced it's merger with infamous World of Warcraft creators Blizzard Entertainment, and this caused troubles for Underground Development, who were ready to display their game to Activision, Lead Designer of the game Kyle Brink explains:

"As is normal in a merger, you do everything you can to clean up your balance sheet. A studio that isn't in full production on a title with major revenue attached to it, which is about to ask for tens of millions in development dollars, is a great candidate for closure at that point. Was this also a way to keep IW happy after they had just produced Modern Warfare and made a hojillion dollars? Perhaps, but nobody ever put it to us that way." - Kyle Brink, Underground Development

It would appear that during the merger with Blizzard, Activision considered Modern Warfare to be a more worthwhile bet than that of Devil's Brigade, and in doing so closed down the funding for the game. Shortly after the project was cut, Designer James Schomer gathered the team together and announced that it was very likely it wouldn't last much longer - sure enough, Underground Development disbanded shortly thereafter, with many of the big names who worked on the project going their seperate ways.

The project was never mentioned again by Activision - after all, it has rode the tidal wave of success granted by Infinity Ward and Treyarch ever since. Who knows what could have been for Devil's Brigade? It may very well have been the end of the Call of Duty series, or indeed it could've been just as successful as Modern Warfare was. VandenBerghe sums up his time with Devil's Brigade, and the reason he believes it didn't take off, in a single paragraph, and it is perhaps the best explanation we'll ever get of the game that was never meant to be.

"My dad had a great metaphor for this kind of work. He said, ‘You know, you pack your boat, you put all your food and fuel and everything you think you're going to need in there. You get your maps and charts. You pick your team. Then you put your boat out there and you raise your sails ... and sometimes the wind blows and sometimes you just sit there in the lagoon.' And we just kind of sat there in the lagoon." - Jason VandenBerghe on Devil's Brigade

Blizzard says goodbye to 600 of its employees

Blizzard: 20 Year Legacy Is Quality (And Awesomeness)

Approximately 600 employees of Blizzard have been fired by the company. Blizzard says it anticipates approximately 90% of the affected employees will come from departments not related to game development. The World of Warcraft development team will not be impacted.  Blizzard's release schedule won't be affected either.

"Steve, I thought Blizzard was making a crap-ton of money. What gives?" you may be asking. Well, the video game business is a little more complicated than that. Here's how Blizz explains the firings:

"Constant evaluation of teams and processes is necessary for the long-term health of any business. Over the last several years, we've grown our organization tremendously and made large investments in our infrastructure in order to better serve our global community. However, as Blizzard and the industry have evolved we've also had to make some difficult decisions in order to address the changing needs of our company," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "Knowing that, it still does not make letting go of some of our team members any easier. We're grateful to have had the opportunity to work with the people impacted by today's announcement, we're proud of the contributions they made here at Blizzard, and we wish them well as they move forward."

Nexuiz demo now available to download.

Image from Nexuiz

If your a fan of old school Quake or Unreal then its probably a safe bet that you'll enjoy this demo.  I haven't personally had a chance yet to try it out, but from reading online it seems like a pretty fun experience.  As far as reviews go I've seen scores as high as 8/10 so that pretty good for an Xbox Live Arcade game.  The only negative I have seen so far is its hard to find a room (which is excusable, since its a demo) and lag can be an issue, but I've only read that from a couple of people.  What online game doesn't experience some lag though.  Speaking of online, this demo has it.  So its free and you can play online with your friends before deciding to spend 800msp ($10).

Could LIMBO be going mobile soon?

Playdead's black and white platformer Limbo may be climbing onto new platforms. A new job listing at the Danish developer (via Shacknews) indicates that the studio is "investigating" new platforms, including iOS, Windows 8, Android, browsers, and "others" for potential future ports.

"We have already released a game on X360, PS3, Windows, OSX, and OnLive and we are continuously investigating other possible platforms," reads the job listing. "We are currently investigating [the] following new platforms: iOS, Win8, Android, NACL, and other platforms could become relevant as well."

Limbo was not specifically called out in the job listing, but the shadowy 2010 platformer is the only title the studio has shipped. That game debuted on Xbox Live and subsequently arrived on Mac, Windows PC, the PlayStation Network, and the streaming service OnLive. In its job listing, the studio also noted that it is "working on our next title, following the release of Limbo."

Lionhead Studios set to announce another "big" surprise at GDC

We haven't heard much from Peter Molyneux or Lionhead Studios since the Kinect game Fable: The Journey made its debut appearance at E3 last year. That all may be changing soon, with a countdown clock on the studio's official website ticking off the hours until GDC week starts next Monday.

Text above the clock indicates that we're looking at a re-launch of the website -- "It's time for a fresh look and feel for our website," the page reads -- but there's also the suggestion that some "surprises" might be coming.  The only possible hint is a sewn-on button graphic situated just above the countdown clock. What do you think? Just a site re-launch or do we have some substantive news incoming?

2 Months of Xbox Live Gold for $2

Good news for those that currently don't have a Gold account and can't or don't want to pay the $60 price tag.  Right now if you turn on your Xbox and check out the Dashboard there is an advertisement for 2 months of Xbox Live for $2.  I personally took this offer, because I was in need of a renewal and was actually looking online for the cheapest option while I turned my Xbox on and saw the news.  Don't miss this great deal and purchase it today.

Things to keep in mind though...

1: This automatically starts auto-renewal at $9.99 after the 2 months are up.
2: You can only do it once per account and seemingly only on accounts that don't currently have live.

Boondock Saints game?  How can it go wrong?

Fans of 1999's cult violence and crime movie Boondock Saints are in luck: A video game adaptation of the film is coming out. The game is in development at smaller developer Critical Mass Interactive and the cast from the Boondock Saints films will be hosting a panel at SXSW next month.

I spoke to Critical Mass president and CEO Matt Scibilia about they game, and while he says the company is keeping things a bit mysterious for the time being, he did give me a few details of what we can expect.

According to Scibilia, Boondock Saints: The Game will be a "full-on co-op shooter," and is being developed for the PC and Xbox 360, with the ability to go to PS3. While the game is in too early of a stage to know for sure, Scibilia would like it to come out as a full retail release, although it might come out in episodic downloadable form.
